Frank R. Southers is well-qualified to write about the Texas Lawyer Disciplinary System because he served in San Antonio on the Grievance Committee for 10 years, the last 6 as Chairperson. Since then he has represented complainants, accused lawyers, and witnesses.
As an Adjunct Professor of Law for 20 years at St. Mary’s University School of Law, Mr. Southers taught Workers’ Compensation, Personal Injury Law, Personal Injury Practice, and Legal Malpractice.
Certified as a Personal Injury Trial Specialist by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, he has also filled many leadership roles, such as Chair of the Litigation Section of the State Bar of Texas and President of the San Antonio Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates.
He graduated from St. Mary’s University with a B.A. in English and graduated magnum cum laude from St. Mary’s University School of Law at age 22.
Mr. Southers has also been named as a “Super Lawyer” by Texas Monthly Magazine.
He co-authored a legal treatise, “Texas Workers’ Compensation Desk Book,” and has written many legal articles covering such topics as Evidence, Trial Practice, Civil Procedure, Medical Malpractice, Mediation, Legal Malpractice, and Grievance Law.
Now, Mr. Southers has turned to writing fiction, especially about lawyers—with “The Grievance Committee—Book One” as the first in the series.
While he was fine-tuning his writings, he was in 2010 diagnosed with cancer (a sarcoma on the right side of his neck, just below the ear). For 25 days, he received daily radiation at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Four weeks later, surgeons removed the remaining mass of tissue and successfully transferred his right pectoral muscle to cover the void on the neck. Periodic tests demonstrate that he is now cancer free.
Although raised in San Antonio, Mr. Southers now resides in Austin with his wife, Dr. Linda R. Southers, PhD. and their two dogs.
